BE THE MATCH!

The Be The Match Marrowthon is a national campaign from June 8 – 22, 2009, building awareness of the marrow registry and offering an opportunity to join the registry without cost (FREE) to new registrants.

Thousands of critically ill patients search the registry every day hoping to find a generous donor willing to donate healthy blood-forming cells. Today, local patients Victor, Javier, Sean, Nick, Dylan and Matt are all looking for matched donors to help them survive leukemia. Jared, Michelle, Dominic, Noel, and Erica have all survived their diseases because of generous strangers who donated for them. There is a special need for registrants with minority ethnicities.

If you – or friends and family - are interested in joining the registry without cost to you, here’s how and where you can sign up from June 8-22, 2009:

    * Designated BloodSource centers in Davis, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Roseville, Chico, Redding and Merced
    * Designated mobile drives are listed at www.bloodsource.org  
    * Online at www.bethematch.org, with the promo code BloodSource09 and a swabbing kit will be sent to your home.

Joining the registry is easy as 1, 2, 3 and involves:

1.      Making a good faith commitment to donate marrow or blood stem cells if you are a match and to keep your contact information updated

2.      Completing paperwork

3.      Swabbing the inside of the cheek for tissue-typing (if you sign up online, a swabbing kit will be sent to your home)

The Marrowthon is also a good opportunity to share information about other ways to help patients, such as blood donation and blood component donations. I have much to say, but right now everything can wait except for Nick. Nick is 28 years old, part Japanese and Caucasian and HAS NO MATCH. Please pass on this information to all Asian Americans you know. They are expediting the kits for Nick. Here is the information you need to know.

Without people stepping up to the plate and getting swabbed Nick has NO HOPE!

Here are the essential facts:
1) Any person whose ethnic background is a mix of Asian and Caucasian, and is in good health with no history of cancer or major illness, and is between the ages of 18 and 60, is a potential donor for Nick. Expanding on the initial information, one does not need to be 75% Caucasian and 25% Asian — any potential mix could work. While the most likely match would be from a person who is 75% Caucasian and 25% Japanese, it is absolutely possible that other combinations of Caucasian-Asian background in different proportions could work. The Asian background should be Sino-Asian, rather than Indo-Asian. Finding an ideal match with all of Nick’s markers is very difficult, and we do not want to exclude any potential donors.
Potential donors should:
1) First log onto “Be The Match” National Marrow Donor Program http://www.marrow.org/JOIN/Join_in_Person/index.html . Enter your zip code to find the nearest donor drives in your area.
If no drives are scheduled in your area in the next couple days, then ….
2) Log onto http://www.AADP.org and order a test kit. Free kits are available for mixed races or minorities. At the top of the page, click “Register” and select “Request a Test Kit.”
Results from kits ordered through AADP.org — as well as from drives organized for Nick by AADP and “Be The Match” — are being expedited to Nick’s medical team.

In the email, include your registration ID number, the location where you were tested, and testing date. The reason for this is that the national database usually takes a few weeks to be updated with a new potential donor's test results. For Nick, time is of the essence. They will be expediting these samples for Nick so his doctors will be able to urgently retrieve possible matches.

The NMDP is holding a Marrowthon from June 8 to June 22.  At this time you can go to www.marrow.org and get a kit mailed to you for free!  I will have more information on that soon.
